YMCA catapults young people to CEO positions for a day

Georgie Broinowski, a 24-year old from Sydney, will soon leap from being a marketing assistant for a company that delivers nutritious meals to people with disabilities, to a chief executive; at least for one day.

Georgie will take up the volunteer position as National Chief Executive Officer of the YMCA for the day on 13 April 2018, as part of the annual YMCA CEO for a Day initiative. Along with 11 young people who will also simultaneously play the role of CEO at local YMCAs for the day.

Coinciding with National Youth Week celebrations Australia-wide, the Young YMCA CEO program highlights a range of issues affecting young people, including unemployment, homelessness, suicide and mental health issues, safety, obesity, disability, disadvantage and affordable, accessible training courses.

The initiative enables young people, aged 18 to 30, to lead the organisation and have a meaningful say on potential solutions to youth issues and programs.

Georgie said she is excited to have the opportunity to experience being the Australian CEO of a global organisation.

“I am looking forward to developing my leadership skills and providing suggestions on how the YMCA can improve opportunities and experience for young people in Australia,” said Georgie.

YMCA Australia CEO, Melinda Crole, said she is looking forward to seeing Georgie empowered to take the reigns for a day. “I am eager to learn more about what matters to Georgie, her friends, peers and family, and to support her to advocate for change by providing us with recommendations from her experience. I hope that other organisations will follow suit in engaging with young people to better facilitate youth-informed decisions.

“The YMCA believes in the power of inspired young people; and this initiative is just one of the many proactive ways that we are demonstrating this belief,” said Ms Crole.

During the Young CEO of the Day Event on Friday 13th April, Georgina will host a Facebook Live Panel Discussion with other young YMCA leaders from 12.30pm-1.00pml.  Tune in via @YMCA_Australia Facebook.
